Reading a lot of Blade of the Immortal for research purposes and I felt the need to talk about one of the most interesting aspects of it. Heroes are traditionally defined by the villains they encounter so when one arises as sick and twisted as this vile piece of shit I can’t help but feel impressed. Introduced as an antithesis to protagonist Manji’s more easy going ways of strength, Shira very quickly set the bar high for how fucked up someone can be in a series that’s already full of violent and sadistic antagonists. Shira is an absolute sociopath who revels in it. Sure, that’s a fairly typical sort of villain… but damn. He doesn’t stop there, if he did I wouldn’t be writing this.
When Manji finally breaks the forced partnership he had with Shira he cuts his right hand off and Shira fucks off silently for just two weeks before returning to the cast with white hair and a sicker face. Something clearly fucked up happened to him but just losing your hand shouldn’t do that… I was intrigued. When he finally took the spotlight fully once more it got revealed just how disgusting and ill this bastard truly was. His hair went white because he cut off all the meat from his forearm that was left so he could sharpen the bones and use them as daggers to kill Manji with.
I don’t really get effected by body horror, but this made even me cringe. It wasn’t over the top, either. It was played entirely straight in that it hurts him tremendously every time he uses it and he kept cutting away *solely* because he is mentally ill and the thought made sense to him. Jesus, it was fucking horrifying. I love this guy. I ESPECIALLY love how he deals with being on the other end of the rope. Where I’m at he recently was sent plummeting to his death (? I really hope not. It was vague enough that he could’ve survived but realistically unlikely…) All he fucking had to say was this;
This dude’s a fucking class act. 10/10 villain.
