Konosuba or God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! is a recent anime series based off the light novel series of the same name by Natsume Akatsuki. It’s become fairly popular lately and although it just recently finished up a few weeks ago they’ve already greenlit a second season. But how was it, you might ask? Well, I just finished up my viewing on all 10 episodes of this silly little series and below I’ll let you know what I though.

Spoilers Ahead

Konosuba has a pretty fun premise, I’ll give it that. The main character dies in the beginning (quite embarassingly I might add) and through magical shiz involving the Goddess Aqua he ends up being given a chance to reincarnate into a world parodying Dragon Quest and MMORPGs. Sato Kazuma was a hikkikomori NEET virgin in his prior life and he specialized in these sorts of fantasy RPGs, so he was ecstatic at the idea of reincarnation. Even more interesting the Goddess says that Kazuma can pick one thing to bring along with him to the new world to help him in his journey. He is presented with a bunch of different magic items and abilities, but ultimately he ends up getting pissed at the Goddess Aqua for her crass behavior… leading him to choose her in order to spite her. He drags her out from her cozy little job as a Goddess and into the fantasy world where they both have to work to meet ends meet.

The cast is really fun, Kazuma probably being the high point. He’s incredibly genre-savvy because of his fantasy RPG experience and this allows him to call BS on all the things that happen. I ended up liking Kazuma a whole lot for just how brazen and silly he gets. He’s a complete scumbag at times and not in a typical anime pervert way (although he is indeed one of those, too).

Ladies.

Ladies.

He bullies girls when it gets him something and he thinks on his feet because his stats are low. That’s another thing I liked too. The series has him and Aqua join an Adventurer’s Guild and they introduce this whole stat and leveling up system that I actually thought was kind of interesting. He’s able to learn skills from any other class because of his Adventurer class so Kazuma ends up with some nice abilities, some more comical than others. I should probably mention there’s a lot of fanservice in this show. It’s not as overt as in some series, but it’s still a lot… like whenever he uses the Thief Skill ‘Steal’ he unintentionally steals all the cute anime girl’s panties.

The other main characters are all entertaining as well. The first of them being the aforementioned Goddess of Water, Aqua. I didn’t get a good read on her at first until the second half of the first episode where I realized she was great. She’s whiny, lazy, crude, has a comically low Intelligence stat and man did I end up loving her for it. They bounce off so many great jokes from this that she’s just impossible to hate. I want to watch bad things happen to her just for the satisfaction of it, I guess. She’s also supposed to be the Arch Priest class which is more or less a White Mage. Kazuma’s party is all meant to lampoon each of the classes they are, with her’s being pretty obvious in that she’s a holy Goddess with an irredeemable personality.

Aqua

I want this anime woman to suffer but only because I love her.

Then there’s the 14 year old chunibyo wizard Megumin, who despite the strangeness of that sentence ended up being just as funny. Her whole gimmick is that she’s a Crimson Demon who loves explosion magic and REFUSES to learn any other sort of magic… which kind of sets her back since she loses all her MP after just one explosion spell. She then falls to the floor and is completely useless the rest of the day leading to all the other partys in the Adventurer’s guild refusing to let her join them. She was pretty great. I also really liked her voice actress. I haven’t heard her in anything else, but something about her voice was just really cute to me.

She’s talking about her staff you disgusting freak.

The last principle character is a Crusader (more or less the Knight class) named… Darkness. Yeah just go with it. Her character schtick is that she’s a knight who is supposed to have pure intentions and all that yet she only throws herself in harms way because she’s a hardcore masochist who gets turned on by the thought of all those generic RPG tentacle monsters and Demon Kings abusing her and having their way with her. I’ll be honest in that her humor was fairly repetitive for me until they started to develop her a bit more in the last couple episodes of the season. It was then that I started to like her more, but it was a while before it got there. You hear one tentacle rape fantasy delusion, you hear them all.

You would think as a sadist this would totally be my thing. You're not entirely wrong but eh. I did grow to love her at least.

In terms of an ongoing story Konosuba doesn’t really have much of one. Funny RPG stuff happens and they take on quests to fight funny RPG monsters and sometimes anime boobs are involved (and sometimes they aren’t). The things that they get involved with are all really, really fun though and by episode 3 I found myself really enjoying the setting just for how much love it had for those older days of simple RPGs. The design of the wanted posters and quest posters though seemed like an almost carbon copy of Monster Hunter, though. Not a bad thing mind you, but with how they start each quest with a fanfare theme it seriously brings up Monster Hunter to mind… God I can’t wait to play MH Generations.

I still want to marry the Guildmarm.

The animation is decent, although it slips into meh qualities more than once. All the background characters are pretty vibrant and fun though they lack consistency and detail at times. Most everyone outside the main cast has very simple generic fantasy RPG designs and this overall helps the whole bright colored aesthetic. I liked the colorful presentation a lot and the backgrounds can get pretty nice looking too.

I don't really have context for thi one I just wanted to show you cute anime faces cause all my readers are my friends.

Now, I usually am not incredibly huge on fanservice and ecchi when it’s not needed but I really did have fun with episode 9 which solely focused on that more or less. It gets shown that there’s a shop in the city run by a group of Succubi who offer sexual gratification dreams to male adventurers so they can relieve their sexual desires and not have to perv on the other female adventurers. I thought it was pretty funny that this actually got brought up how wandering around with a lot of scantily clad fantasy females would push men to their sexual breaking points to the point where they basically had a magic whore house to prevent it. It led to some pretty funny stuff involving Darkness in the second half of the episode.

“She’s a succubus! I’ll say she does.”

I’m pretty glad Konosuba is getting a second season. It’s not the funniest anime in existence but when it lands its jokes they land pretty damn hard. With a cast of endearing characters, a fun setting and premise there’s a lot to love about this series and I’d eagerly recommend it to anyone who is interested in it. It gave me some pretty funny reaction images at least.
